June 27th - July 11th 2006
For the first time this year, this huge cinema event founded by Costa-Gavras in 2003 becomes a proper Festival with a competition, which might give Paris a decent international film festival noticeable on the world scene. Until then we only had le Festival du Film de Paris, held in March, usually small, which was a debacle in 2006. Obviously Cannes explains why Paris doesn't appear on the International Festival circuit map. Maybe that's why the French capital doesn't attract as much world premiere. The festivals in Nantes (3 Continents) is bigger than here. There are lots of films shown at Paris Cinéma every year (about 400 titles in 20 venues for 70,000 admissions), but mostly second-run or older movies, whiches are available all year round in parisian arthouses anyway. Although there are many films coming from the Cannes selection (Climates, Lights in the Dusk, The Science of Sleep, Bamako, To Get To Heaven First You Have To Die, Luxury Car, La Raison du plus faible, Bug, El Violon, Nouvelle Chance...)
As always, recommendations welcomed to help me find the best screenings, especially for the Korean retrospective and the new films. (*) Films I've seen already.

Oh my goodness, what a wonderful collage of films! Thanks for taking the time to replicate the line-up, Harry! "Old Joy" and "Quinceanera" have certainly generated good buzz, though I've seen neither. "Science of Sleep" has gotten some good write-ups. I can certainly recommend "La Dignidad de los Nadies" and would be most interested to hear your reactions. The Korean Cinema Retrospective is unbelievable!! If you like shock cinema, Park Chan-wook's your man. Otherwise, I can recommend Bong Joon-ho's "Memories of Murder", Lu Zhang's "Grain In Ear" and the very fun "Linda Linda Linda"!!
I am so envious, Harry, but glad you are there to report back.
Nice to see you here, Michael. You interview with Arriaga was really good!
Thanks for the advice, I write them al down, and will be heading for these first.
I've seen a couple Park Chang-wook already, I like it.
Except for Bamako from Cannes-Off I really don't know anything about the films selected in competition there. Oh yes I heard about Quinceañera from sundance too.
I think I will focus on the Competition, the Off, Nikolaus Geyrhalter and as much Korean recommendations coming in.
As for the reports, I'm already bahind schedule with my Cannes reviews...
2 crazy weeks of busy screenings have started!
I saw Bamako last night with Abderrahmane Sissako and his cast in attendance. Really interesting film!
Somehow a complex cross genre political satire literaly putting the World Bank on trial in a surrealist court to dispute the submission to the African debts.
The double meaning of "court" allows Sissako to set an improbable international trial in the rural courtyard of his own father in a village in Mali. And villagers take a stand to explain how manipulative and imperialistic the debts cancellation really is.
Meanwhile everyday life goes on in the courtyard interfering or not with the trial.
The trial is filmed (film within the film), and we see a western movie watched by the population at night, that Sissako filmed himself, a parody of cowboys killing everyone in an african village, allegory of the colonial powers, performed by his friends Danny Glover (co-producer of the film) and Elie Suleimann.
Cynical, absurd, realist and a witty reversal of genres to assert the emancipation of Africa and the political awareness of its people.
Quinciñera, titled Echo Park, L.A. for French distribution (Opening nationwide on July 5th), with director Richard Glatzer in attendance.
A genre that is now becoming typical, a verité-style teen drama about generation gap, reversal of family values, sex-related issues (teen pregnancy and homosexuality), social class clash...
Interesting perspective on the urban evolution of a traditional mexican district into a speculative Bohemian upper class suburb. And this impressive celebration of the 15th girl's birthday almost bigger than a wedding, with a hummer-limo ! (I didn't even know this thing existed...)
Great use of location and non-actors, but nothing much creative in the mise-en-scène and filmcraft.
The screening for Science of Sleep was sold out with a 100 people, and me, locked out on the street. It opens here in August so it's not too tough.
I went for Bug instead, and I'm glad it wound up that way. Quite an interesting thriller, between political science-fiction and menace horror. The mise-en-scene is genial, The closed-door claustrophobia and the stylish effects install perfectly a credible paranoiac atmosphere. Unfortunately sometimes, when the tension becomes vibrant, it falls over-the-top (over-acting, dialogue excess, overt long take dragging too far) and recall the facile B-movie.
And saw Sehnsucht too, a bleak and slow love triangle tragedy from the new german generation. A young woman director (her second film) who was at film school with Jessica Hausner (one of my favorite young director) in Vienna. Like Hausner, the film explores the banality of rural people based around a real life event. A Romeo and Juliet tale where love despair and death go hand in hand. Sometimes a little too passive and too obvious. But there are many powerful scenes.
